The free demo course.

Three short modules on chords and songwriting, with playable piano demos and a quiz at the end. Learn a little before you buy anything.

Module 1

What a chord is

Lesson 1

Three notes make a chord

A basic chord, called a triad, is three notes stacked with one note skipped between each: play one, skip one, play one, skip one, play one.

Start on C and skip the white keys in between and you get C, E and G — the C major chord.

C major, note by note, then together

Hear C, E and G one at a time, then as one chord.

Lesson 2

Major and minor

Move the middle note of a major chord down by one key and it becomes minor. That one small change turns bright into tender.

C major is C–E–G. C minor is C–E♭–G. Same outside notes, different middle.

Bright, then tender

C major, then C minor — only the middle note moves.

Module 2

Chords that belong together

Lesson 1

Home and away

In the key of C, the C chord feels like home. Other chords feel like trips away from it, and the song feels settled when it comes back.

G (or G7) pulls hardest towards home. That pull is what makes an ending feel finished.

Away… and home

C, then F, then G7 pulling back to C.

Lesson 2

The four-chord loop

C, G, Am and F — four chords from the same key — power thousands of songs. Loop them and you already have the bed of a song.

Try the same four in a different order (Am, F, C, G) and the mood darkens without a single new chord.

C – G – Am – F

The loop behind countless pop songs.

Module 3

Starting a song

Lesson 1

Write over a loop

Pick two chords and loop them. Hum over the top until a short phrase keeps coming back — that's your first hook.

Small is good. Two chords you trust beat eight you're unsure of.

A two-chord writing loop

Am and F, repeating — hum something over it.

Lesson 2

Land the ending

End a section on the home chord and it feels finished. End on G and it feels like a question — perfect before a chorus.

Choose on purpose: question or answer.

Question, then answer

Dm – G (a question)… then Dm – G – C (the answer).
