The twelve notes and the shape of the keyboard

Why the keyboard repeats every twelve keys, and how to find any note without counting from C.

Western music uses twelve pitches, and then starts again an octave higher. On a keyboard those twelve are the seven white keys plus the five black keys inside one repeat of the pattern. Everything else in this course is a way of choosing which of those twelve you want at a given moment.

The black keys come in a group of two and a group of three. That grouping is the only landmark you need: the white key immediately left of the group of two is always C, and the white key between the second and third black key of the group of three is always A. Learn those two and you can name any key on any piano in about a second, without counting up from the bottom.

A note called C# and a note called Db are the same key. Which name you use depends on the key you are in — this is called enharmonic spelling, and it matters more than beginners expect, because it decides whether a chord looks like it belongs or looks like a typo. In the key of E, the note is D#. In the key of Ab, the same key is Eb.
